- What is divestment? – Divestment is when an institution stops investing in a particular sector or set of funds. Minnesota state funds are heavily invested in fossil fuels. The total state investment in the top 200 fossil fuel companies is almost $3 billion.
- Why divest? – Climate change threatens our environment and financial security. Scientists agree that human consumption of fossil fuels is driving significant changes in our climate. Divestment sends the message to business and policy leaders that our reckless use of fossil fuels has to stop. It is possible to divest and keep pensions profitable. In fact, as stocks in fossil fuels continue to under-perform, profitable pensions are only possible through divestment. Since climate change threatens everyone’s financial well-being, a healthy environment and a healthy economy go hand-in-hand.
- What can we do about it? – Pass legislation to divest from fossil fuels.
